水俣の夕日／福田秀美
水俣に住んでいてよかった、と思うことの一つに「夕日」がある。特に海のそばで見る夕日は、私がここに暮らす理由の一つだ、と思うくらい私を支えてくれている。特に、湯の児（※１）、丸島漁港（※２）、親水護岸（※３）、月浦ふれあい公園（※４）は、夕日を見るためによく訪れる場所だ。
One of the things that make me glad to have lived in Minamata is the sunset. The sunsets, especially by the ocean, are one of the reasons I live here, and they support me so much. In particular, Yunoko（※１） , Marushima Fishing Port（※２） , Seawall（※３） and Tsukinoura Fureai Park（※４） are places I often visit to watch the sunset.

水俣の海は、天草諸島・御所浦島・獅子島など対岸の島々に囲まれた穏やかな海だ。台風の前には荒波から避難した大きな船が何日も海に停泊しているくらい、静かな海。その海のそばで見る夕日は、海というより島に沈むという方が正しい。対岸に建物が見え、明かりが灯り、島の人々の暮らしが見える。その向こうに沈んでいく光景を見ると不思議とあたたかな、優しい気持ちになる。夕日が沈むと、急に昼間が終わりを告げ、静かに暗闇が訪れることも、気持ちが切り替わる助けになっているように思う。
I happened to watch the sunset with my children and it made me feel so much kinder. We talked about how beautiful it was, and watched the sunset together. Sharing that time with each other, we reset our minds before returning home. Forgetting all that came before, ”What would you like for dinner today?” and just focusing on enjoying the upcoming meal. Once I learned the meaning of that time,it became a daily routine.

数年前、私は文字通り毎日その夕日を見に行っていた。時間になると、子どもたちと「今日はどこの海に行く？」と話しながら車を走らせる日々。そのころ私は水俣で新しい暮らしを始めたばかりだった。新しい暮らし、というと聞こえはいいが、実際は日々の暮らしが落ち着かず、慣れない中、新しいことに追われ、家の中がピリピリしていた。特に私は気持ちの切り替えができず、イライラを溜め込んでいた。
Some years ago, I used to go to watch that sunset every day. When it’s time to go, the kids and I ask, ”Where are we going to the beach today?” I drove away talking to them. At the time, I had just started a new life in Minamata. A new life - it sounds good, but in reality, the day-to-day life was unsettled, unfamiliar, and the house was tense with new things. I was especially frustrated because I couldn’t change my attitude.

そんな中、たまたま子どもたちと夕日を見た時に、気持ちが優しくなるような気がした。「きれいだね」と話しながら、沈む夕日を一緒に眺める。その時間を共有することで、お互い家に帰る前に気持ちをリセットする。その前のあれこれを忘れ、「今日の夕ご飯は何にする？」とこれからの食事を楽しむことに集中する。その時間の意味を知ってから、それが日々のルーティンとなった。

そして今、暮らしが落ち着き、それぞれが習い事や送り迎えに追われるとともに、そのルーティンは自然となくなった。車から見える夕日は変わらず私の支えとなっているが、あんなにせっぱつまった気持ちで海へ向かうことはなくなった。でも、暮らしの中にある海が、夕日が、こんなにも心強い存在であることを私は知っている。これから何かあったとしても、あそこに行けば大丈夫。そう思える場所がそばにあることは、人生における幸せの一つだと思う。
Now, as our lives have settled down and we’ve each been busy with lessons and drop-offs and pick-ups… that routine has fallen away naturally. The sunset that I can see from the car still sustains me, but I no longer head to the beach with such a tight feeling. But I know that the sea and the sunset in our lives is such a reassuring presence. If anything else happens in the future, I can go there and I’ll be fine. I think one of the happiest things in life is to have a place near you where you can feel that way.
