京都から水俣に移り住みました。その中で、明神さんとのご縁があって今に至ります。明神さんは山から海に流されてきた神様です。水俣市明神町に祀られています。初めて水俣へ来た頃は、明神海岸をふらふら歩いていました。その上の岬に住む理巳子さん・利夫さんと出会い、お二人が明神について語られる時の、実際にあったことみたいに聞こえるような、もし本当に実話かと聞かれるとギリギリアウトとも思えるお話に自分は惹かれました。

I moved to Minamata from Kyoto. In the process, I made a connection with Myojin-san, and here I am. Myojin-san is a god who was washed up from the mountains into the sea. He is enshrined in Myojin Town, Minamata City.　When I first came to Minamata, I wandered along the Myojin Beach.　I met Mrs and Mr. Rimiko and Mr. Toshio, who live on the cape above the beach, and I was fascinated by their stories about Myojin, which sounded like they had actually happened, but if you ask me if they were really true stories, I would say that they were not.

理巳子さんは、たまにとんでもないお話をされます。

「イソギンチャクが戸惑っている」

「海に生まれて海を嫌がる貝（タマキビガイ）たち」

「島をちょんぎったカニやつ」

「島へ背泳ぎで帰るアワビ」

　―その度に利夫さんは「嘘ばっかじゃねえの？」と言います。確かにという気持ちが半分以上あるけれど、それを見てみたい自分もなくはない―

Sometimes, Rimiko-san, Mrs. Yoshinaga, tells outrageous stories.

“The sea anemone is puzzled.”“Shells born in the sea hate the sea (Tamahiki sea shell).”

“The crab that chopped off the island.”

“The abalone that swam back to the island.”

-Each time, Toshio-san, Mr. Yoshinaga, says, “Aren’t they all lies? Each time, Toshio says, “Aren’t they all lies?

Half of my feelings agree with Toshio-san, but half of me really wants to see it.

理巳子さんの話は、まるっきりほら話なのかなあ・・・。そう半信半疑の心境で、2020年8月に「強風で海岸の岩が動いている」話を聞いたので、それなら自分の目で確かめられるだろうと観察を始めました。ほぼ毎日通い続けていると、思いがけない出会いもよくしました。貝たちが1列に並んで行進したり、波でヤドカリが流されていたり、カニやつが木登りをし始めたり。そんな光景を目にする度に、聞いていた明神の物語に少しでも触れた思いになりました。写真が明神を語り継ぐまで、時間がまだまだかかると思います。長く続ければ続けるだけ良くなっていく気がするから、あと少しと思い撮り続けたいです。

I wonder if Rimiko-san’s story is a complete lie…. In August of 2020, I heard that the rocks on the beach were moving due to strong winds, so I started observing them to see for myself.　As I kept coming back almost every day, I often had unexpected encounters. Shellfish marching in single file, hermit crabs being swept away by the waves, crabs starting to climb trees, and so on.　Every time I saw such scenes, I felt that I had been touched by the story of Myojin that I had heard from Rimiko-san.　I think it will take a long time for the photographs to tell the story of Myojin.I feel that the longer I continue, the better I will get, so I want to keep taking pictures, thinking that I am almost there.

森田具海（Tomomi Morita）

1994年京都生まれ。2016年から写真撮影で熊本県水俣市に通う。その後、移住して3年目。近年の個展に「明神の海 2020-2021」（おれんじ館、水俣、2021）、KYOTOGRAPHIE2018「Sanrizuka ーThen andNow-」（堀川御池ギャラリー、京都、2018）など。

Tomomi Morita

Tomomi Morita was born in Kyoto in 1994 and moved to Minamata City, Kumamoto Prefecture in 2016 to take
photographs.　He has been living in Minamata for three years since then. Recent solo exhibitions include
“Myojin no Umi 2020-2021” (Orenjikan, Minamata, 2021) and KYOTOGRAPHIE 2018 “Sanrizuka -Then and
Now-” (Horikawa Oike Gallery, Kyoto, 2018).
