水俣に移住してきた人が、本当に水俣人になれたかどうかのリトマス試験紙、それが、夏の「競り舟」に選手として参加したことがあるかないか、ではないだろうか。そのくらい、全水俣市民を上げた一大行事が競り舟だ。各地区を代表するチームをはじめ、会社、事業団、商店会、警察、医療センター、市役所、農業組合・・・。あらゆる水俣を構成する人々が、チームを作り、本番に向けて真剣に練習。あなたが、観光客ならば、この年に1度の行事の日に巡り合えたあなたは、幸運だ。ここには、過去でも未来でもない。「今」を輝く水俣のいのちがあるから。

The litmus test for whether or not a newcomer to Minamata has truly become a Minamata person is whether or not he or she has participated in the summer “Boat Race” as a competitor. The boat race is such a big event that all Minamata citizens participate in it. Representatives of each district, company, business association, shopping association, police, medical center, city hall, agricultural cooperative, and so on. All the people who make up Minamata form teams and practice seriously for the event. If you are a tourist, you are lucky to be here on the day of this once-a-year event. This is neither the past nor the future. It’s the life of Minamata that shines in the present.

The following is an excerpt from “Minamata Dodo” planned and supervised by Minamata City.

朝から気温はぐんぐん上がり、太陽が照りつける。水俣川に手を入れれば、すでにぬるま湯になっているのではないかという盛夏の一日。その川沿いに人びとは集まり、笑い声、激励の声があちこちで立ちのぼっている。バックコーラスの蝉しぐれは、入道雲の空から降ってくるかのよう。

The temperature rises and rises, and the sun shines and shines. It is such a hot day  that we imagine that if we slipped our hands into the Minamata River, the water  would be lukewarm. So many people had gathered along the riverbank. The  sound of laughter and cheering spread everywhere. The buzzing of cicadas, like a  background chorus to this scene, is so loud that it feels like they are falling from  the sky.  

８月初旬、「競り舟」が水俣川を舞台に繰り広げられる。百年を超える歴史の伝統行事だ。数人が縦に並んで櫂を漕ぎ、細長い舟を走らせて競う。明治の中ごろ、水俣で回船業を営む人が行商の途上、たまたま長崎でペーロン競漕を見物した。長崎へは中国から伝来した競技で、中国名は「飛龍（フェイロン）」。その颯爽としたようすにすっかり心を奪われた回船業者は、水俣に帰ってから店の奉公人のレクリエーションに採用することを思いついた。似たような細長い投網船があるじゃないか、あれでいこう、と。

これが「競り舟」のルーツといわれる。お盆の月夜に何艘かの細長い船を競争させた。きっと川面に月が映っていただろう。櫂で漕げばその月が揺れる。川風がここちよい。

やがてそのここちよさと競技の面白さは漁師たちにも広がり、夏の行事に定着していく。別名「ヘンヨヤッサ」とも呼ばれたこの大会だったが太平洋戦争で漕ぎ手を失い中断、戦後復活するが昭和30年代に水俣病問題でふたたび中断。再復活したのは昭和51(1976）年のことだった。

Every year in early August, the over hundred-year-old festival of Seribune  (“Boat Competition”) takes place. Several people sit lengthwise in a narrow boat,  and row. Legend goes that back in the late 19th century, Minamata locals in the  shipping industry saw the peiron (Japanized word for “Dragon Boat”) rowing  competition in Nagasaki, and were inspired by the graceful boats. Once back in  Minamata, a shipping industrialist decided to introduce Dragon Boating as a  recreational activity for his employees. There was no need for him to buy new  boats, as he already owned vessels of similar shape, the very boats he used for  fishing. This is said to be the origin of Seribune. On that first night, several boats  competed in the moonlight during Obon (Festival of the Dead). The moon’s  smile reflected on the river’s surface. The movement of the boats sent ripples  through this reflection. The breeze on the river, so very refreshing.

Word spread among fishermen about this competition, and it soon became a  regular summer activity. It stopped briefly with the start of World War II, when  they lost the rowers to the draft or the war effort, and restarted after the war, only  to be stopped again in the 1950s with the rise of Minamata disease. It was only in  1976 that people were able to enjoy Seribune once again. 

日傘を差すのも忘れて

 平成の「競り舟」は華やかだ。細長い船が横一列に川を走らせていくようすはたしかに長崎ペーロンだが、英国はテムズ川で行われるオックスフォード大学とケンブリッジ大学の対抗戦で有名なボート競技、レガッタを思わせる。レガッタと違うところは、選手たちの中央に櫂のリズムをとるために鐘を鳴らして調子をとる選手がいることだ。

「トンカントン、トンカントン」
 その音は川岸で応援する人の胸を躍らせる。

Seribune nowadays is a glorious affair. Although the narrow boats, lined up  in a row and moving along the river, look like the Nagasaki dragon boats, there is  something in this event that reminds us of the famous regattas, or boat races, held  along the River Thames.

The one thing that makes Seribune different is that there  is a rower sitting in the middle of the boat, clanging a bell to create a rhythm for  the rowers.

 予選から始まって準決勝、決勝と進んでいく「競り舟」は、お祭りというよりも立派なレース感覚である。出場チーム名がいかにもまちを挙げての競漕を思わせる。各地区を代表するチームをはじめ、会社、事業団、商店会、警察、医療センター、市役所、農業組合・・・。男子組と女子組と分かれるが、どちらも真剣な闘いぶりである。ずいぶん練習してこの日に備えてきたにちがいない、と思える息の合った櫂さばきだ。勝ち上がってきたチームどうしの準決勝、決勝ともなると、激しいデッドヒートである。

水俣川河口の300メートルで争われる競技大会。応援者も熱くなる。太陽はそろそろ中天に差しかかり、灼熱だ。そのなか、日傘を差すのもシャッターを切るのも忘れ、「そこだあ、ふんばりどころだあ、行かんかい！ 」
熱烈に鼓舞する。残念ながら、応援するチームは競り負ける。声援は激しかったが、川から上がってきた選手たちの落とす肩をそっと叩いてねぎらうようすはいかにも優しい。女子チームでは涙ぐむ選手もいて、思いもよらない本気の競技性に見物客はどっきりする。

With qualifying rounds, semi-finals, and finals, Seribune is more like an  athletic competition than a festival. Each team is made up of teams from local  areas and neighborhoods. There are teams made up of neighbors, company teams,  foundation teams, shop association teams, police, medical teams, city offices,  agricultural co-ops—the list goes on and on. There are men’s teams and women’s  teams. The hundreds of hours each team has put into their practice is evident in  their rowing, perfectly synced with the rhythm banged out by the chimer. The  races between those who have fought their way into the finals and semi-finals  finish in an absolute dead heat. The rowing competition takes place on 300 m of  Minamata River near the ocean. The end of this festival signals the end of one  part of summer.
