A time just to listen to the harp

(by Minamata Impact)

In the town of Minamata, there’s a quiet and beautiful time where you can just listen to the sound of the harp. Sometimes, a time just to listen to the harp is held at churches around the town. We asked Yurie Tada, a clinical psychologist living in Koshi City who plays the harp there, to share her thoughts with us.(by Minamata Impact)

Nice to meet you. My name is Yurie Tada. I live in Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, and I play the harp. I graduated from the Department of Clinical Psychology at Luther Gakuin University in Tokyo, including graduate school, and I also work as a clinical psychologist. Because my husband, who has been a music buddy since university, is involved with the Japan Evangelical Lutheran Koshi Church and also serves as a pastor at Minamata Church and as a chaplain at Sawarabi Children’s Garden in Minamata, I have had opportunities to play the harp at facilities in Minamata and at Lutheran Minamata Church in 2025.

In 2025, I had a session once a month, and in 2026, the frequency decreased, but I still made time to “just listen to the harp.” I usually do it around 5 p.m. on Saturdays. During that time, it doesn’t matter if you sit, stand, or even lie down while listening. I hope that the people listening can let go of some of the various roles and burdens they carry in their daily lives and take a moment for themselves. And I would be really happy if it helps them feel a little more relaxed or at ease.

To me, the harp is an instrument that lets me pour my feelings out honestly. One thing I love about the harp is that it’s okay if you’re not trying to play perfectly. I feel like the vibrations that come from the strings gently traveling through the air allow me to put my emotions into sound without needing to use words. Rather than simply transmitting something to others through the harp, I hope that those who listen can use it as a time to have a conversation with themselves, or a moment to connect with someone important in their hearts.

Take a break from all the different roles and responsibilities for a bit, and just breathe. Give yourself some forgiveness. Feel that you are not alone. I hope it can be a time like that. I want my harp playing to be a small ‘pathway’ for that. Whenever I play the harp, I always pray while performing with two thoughts in mind. The first is, ‘You are the light of the world.’ When I was in college, in a welfare class, I learned about Kazuo Itoga, who devoted his life to the welfare and education of children with intellectual disabilities, and his words, ‘Turn these children into the light of the world.’ Not ‘give the light to these children,’ but ‘turn these children into the light of the world.’ At that time, I didn’t fully understand the meaning, but later I encountered the Biblical phrase, ‘You are the light of the world.’ I took it to mean that we are all light just by being. When I play, I pray while putting my feelings into it for those listening, thinking, ‘You are precious’ and ‘I respect your existence.’

The second thing is that if the people listening are carrying guilt or regret and are suffering, my thought is, ‘I hope you can forgive yourself.’ I hope they can gradually let go of that pain and hardship. And I hope they can feel like, ‘It’s okay to be myself.’ I hope they can feel that they are not alone and experience connections with others. I play with that thought in mind, praying as I perform.

Through Akiko Ishihara, a member of the Japan Evangelical Lutheran Minamata Church, we had the opportunity to visit facilities in Minamata city outside of the church as part of our service activities as Minamata Church. For example, at the Minamata City Children’s Center and at ‘Hikaritokokage,’ we played the harp for children and their parents. We also had time to play the harp for patients with fetal Minamata disease at ‘Kibou Mirai Minamata.’ Everyone we met was really warm, and whenever we performed, I always felt a warm and happy feeling.

Every time I get to perform in Minamata, it reminds me again of how I want to live my life. That is, I want to be close to people’s hearts through music and support them as they walk their own paths. Being able to play the harp while praying for the people listening is a great blessing for me. I am truly grateful to everyone in Minamata who has listened to my performances so far. From now on, I want to continue playing the harp as a prayer for each individual listener. If there are any groups or facilities in Minamata or nearby areas that would like to hear the harp, I would be really happy if you could reach out to me.
