Terra Madre Japan 2025 in Minamata

Thanks to everyone, we were able to successfully wrap up Terra Madre Japan 2025 in Minamata from November 1st to 3rd. I’m the local organizing committee member, so it might sound a bit prideful to say this, but the scenes on the first, second, and third days all went far beyond what I imagined.

Day 1 of the producers’ meeting. The opening started with footage of Minamata’s nature, followed by DJ SHOW-T taking the stage. In a venue filled with big fishing flags, SHOW-T was amazing singing ‘We Are Nature,’ made just for that day. Then the local organizers hung bags of mandarins around their shoulders and handed out Satsuma mandarins to the 400 participants at the venue. Everyone ate the mandarins together. The venue was filled with the smell of mandarins as the day’s program got started.

On the second day, there was a market at the Eco Park. It was a time for the makers and the eaters to connect. We had no idea how many people would come until the day of the event, but when I got to the venue, I almost cried seeing it bustling with so many visitors. Cheers went up here and there, you could hear dancing and singing, and all five of the mandarin orange container talks under the blue sky were very lively. The Minamata disease walking tour was also really great. And at the other venue, Moyai-kan, there was the Slow Food Film Festival, a gathering of home-cooked meals, workshops, and a special exhibition too.

On the third day, there are five optional tours for people coming from both inside and outside the country: the Minamata Sea Course, Satoyama Course, Amano Tea Garden Course, Minamata History Course, and Tsunagi Art Course. We created time for you to experience this region.

And during this period, for those who wanted, there was also a homestay program where we stayed at the homes of local farmers. Anyway, over these three days, we did everything we wanted to do to the fullest. I got to experience that when the feelings of the organizing committee members and the passion, warmth, and thoughts of each participant align properly, you can encounter like that.

And I really want to thank all the supporters who kept moving around throughout the event. Also, thank you so much to everyone who came to this event from both nearby and far away, from all over Japan and abroad. The sights of those three days and hearing people say ‘I’m really glad I came to Minamata. I’ll come again.’ here and there have become a new source of motivation for me.

Next year marks 70 years since the official recognition of Minamata disease. At this event, we kept asking ourselves, ‘We, who are living now, are being questioned. On this land that we inherited from those before us, what kind of culture and food will we pass on to the next generation—70 years from now? It’s not just Minamata; it’s the same wherever you are. [What kind of ‘deliciousness’ will we connect 70 years from now? And what can we start doing from tomorrow for that?]’ We asked these questions continuously. From Minamata, we aim to create a world where someone 70 years later can say ‘thank you.’ From Minamata, we want to create a world where those who had to leave this world 70 years ago before fulfilling their dreams would say ‘thank you.’ The journey continues. Finally, to everyone from the Slow Food Japan team who ran full force with us from preparation to the day of the event, this event was only possible because of you. It was three days of crystallized effort between the Slow Food Japan team and the local team. And then, the local executive committee members who ran alongside us. They’re usually laid-back, but when it counts, their teamwork and support for each other without a word was amazing. I can’t wait to see what kind of scenes we’ll experience next with this team.
