“‘Lapislazuli Blue Earth’ played on the harp for Yuji Kaneko”

(by Minamata Impact)

Yuji Kaneko, a patient with fetal Minamata disease, passed away in September 2026. We asked Mr. Tada, who visited Kaneko-san several times to play the Pastoral Harp for him, to share some memories. *Pastoral Harp is an activity where the harp’s sound accompanies the breathing and energy of people who are bedridden or suffering physically and mentally. It is gaining attention as a form of end-of-life care. (by Minamata Impact)

During service activities from the Minamata Church to the local community, I had the opportunity to visit Yuji Kaneko, who was bedridden, and perform for him. Kaneko was a patient of fetal Minamata disease affected by methylmercury through his mother’s placenta. I heard that he carried on the intentions of his mother, who worked as a storyteller of Minamata disease, and also engaged with his peers in activities to convey the reality of mercury damage. I had the chance to play the harp for Kaneko three times. Twice, I visited him at “Orugenoa,” where he was, and once he came to listen during a harp session I was performing at the Lutheran Minamata Church called “Just Time to Listen to the Harp.”

The last time I met and performed for Mr. Kaneko was on July 12, 2026. Since his condition made it difficult for him to move his body or speak on his own, rather than asking him to sit up and focus on listening to the performance, I wanted to play beside him, following his breathing. I conveyed this idea to Takeko Kato from ‘Kibou Mirai Minamata,’ who had supported Kaneko’s daily life, and got her approval. On the day, Kaneko was awake, and I quietly played a few songs, including his favorite, Seiko Matsuda’s ‘Ruriiro no Chikyuu,’ for about 30 minutes at his bedside, with the room lights dimmed.

On that day, Mr. Kaneko’s older brother and his family, Mr. Kato, and Kiyoko Kagata also came. When I was playing the harp, I prayed that the quiet tone and vibrations of the harp would allow Mr. Kaneko and everyone in the room who cares about him to let go of some of their burdens and feel a bit of healing. Also, whenever I play the harp, I always play with the thought, ‘You are important.’ I felt that all of us are not just waiting for the world to shine on us—we are already light by our very existence. If I put this into my own words, it becomes, ‘You are important.’ At that time too, I thought ‘You are important’ for Mr. Kaneko and everyone in the room while playing the harp.

Two months later, in September 2026, I heard the news of Mr. Kaneko’s passing. I saw a message from Mr. Kato, who had supported him for many years, saying, ‘Even while battling such a serious illness, he showed the strength he naturally had at every moment, using the external pressures that came his way as an opportunity, and I believe he lived a life where he did what he wanted to do and what he felt he should do.’ I remember Mr. Kaneko’s gentle smile when he listened to the harp. Meeting him, who was a strong light in the world, and being able to perform the harp for him—it was a great honor. From now on, I want to continue performing on the harp, being thankful for each encounter and using the feelings born from those meetings as inspiration.
