水俣ライフ／下田 茂徳

水俣に移り住んでから令和2年(2020)4月で8年目を迎えた。
もっとも、過去に1年9か月程住んだことがあるので、トータルでは10年程の居住年数ということになる。

私は佐賀県嬉野市（旧：塩田町）に生まれ、高校卒業までそこで育ち、学生時代には北九州市（小倉）へ行き、そして、就職に伴い熊本県にやってきた。熊本県には、親戚・縁者は無く、いわば、よそ者。そんなよそ者でも、熊本県民になって早30数年。月日が経つのは本当に速い。
「光陰矢の如し」とはよく言ったものだ。そして、その大半を熊本市民として過ごしてきた。

そんな私が現在の生活へと導かれるきっかけとなったのは2000年のこと。業務のために派遣され、水俣に住むことになった。当時は、まだ九州新幹線がなかった時代。今であれば、もしかしたら、新幹線を使って熊本市内から通勤をしたかも知れない。しかし当時は通勤困難地域。

直ぐに水俣市内での生活を開始したが、着任初日はまだ熊本市内。鹿児島本線の特急に乗車し、水俣駅で下車した日が懐かしい。「♬タッタ・タッタ・タッタ・タ～、タッタ・タッタ・タ～、タッタ・タッタ・タッタ・タ～、タッタ・タッタ・タ～、チャララン♬（停車駅アナウンス前の注意喚起のメロディを再現したつもり）『次は、水俣～水俣です』」第１期と言える私の水俣ライフがスタート。

April 2020 marked 8 years since I moved to Minamata.  I had lived for about 1 year and 9 months here in the past, so I have lived here 10 years in total.
I was born in Ureshino City, Saga Prefecture (formerly Shiota Town), and grew up there until graduating from high school. Then, I went to Kitakyushu City (Kokura) when I was a university student, and came to Kumamoto Prefecture to get a job. I was a stranger —I had no relatives in Kumamoto Prefecture. But now it has been 30 years since I moved to Kumamoto. Time flies like an arrow. Most of this time, I have been a Kumamoto citizen.

In 2002, I was dispatched to Minamata for work and started living here. I would have commuted from Kumamoto City to Minamata using the Shinkansen (bullet train). But at that time there was no bullet train in operation here.

I immediately started living in Minamata. I still remember the first day I got off the train at Minamata Station — the announcement saying that the next stop was Minamata. My new life began.

コンパクトで便利な街。鹿児島市内に行くのも熊本市内とほぼ同じ距離。それと比べて距離は長いものの、宮崎市内へもそれほど遠いものではない。まるでへその部分に（水俣が）位置している、そう思えた。市内には海があって山もあって、その両方面に温泉地（海側：湯の児温泉、山側：湯の鶴温泉）もあり温泉も楽しめる。水俣ライフスタートからまだ日の浅い時期、国道を車で走らせ丁度海沿いに差し掛かった時、穏やかな不知火海に沈む夕日の様子が車内に飛び込んできた。思わず「最高！」と心の中で叫んだ。『水俣は生活しやすく魅力的な街』という印象が深く刻まれた。

春には、市内が見渡せる中尾山を始め、市内を通って海に注ぐ水俣川の川沿い、また海岸部である湯の児エリアでは、桜の花が景色を彩り（特に湯の児は“湯の児チェリーライン”と呼ばれる桜の名所）、夏は湯の児で海水浴（花火大会では湯の児ならでは海中花火が披露される）が楽しめ、秋は中尾山のコスモス、冬はやはり温泉と四季を楽しんだ。地元んしー（地元の人）との交流があったことも大きく、水俣での生活は本当に楽しく、充実したものとなった。

Minamata is a compact and convenient city. From Minamata, going to Kagoshima city is almost the same distance as Kumamoto city. Even to Miyazaki city is not far from here. It seemed like Minamata was the center of Kyushu. The sea and mountains are both near the city, and there are hot spring areas (sea side: Yunoko Onsen, mountain side: Yunozuru Onsen) on both sides. Just a few days into my Minamata life, I was driving along the highway and approaching the coast, I was able to see the setting sun on the calm Shiranui Sea. I screamed in my heart, “The best!”  I felt deeply that Minamata is an attractive and very livable town.

In spring, cherry blossoms decorate the scenery, including on Mt. Nakao overlooking the city, and the Minamata River flows into the sea through the city and the Yunoko area along the coast. Yunoko is known for its cherry blossoms, and is called “Yunoko Cherry Line.” In summer, Yunoko is an enjoyable place to swim, and there is an underwater fireworks show at the Yunoko fire festival. I enjoyed the atmosphere of Mt. Nakao in autumn and the hot springs in the winter.

しかし、時の流れは止められるはずもなく、派遣業務の終了に伴い熊本市内への転居の時期がやってきた。名残惜しくもできる限り残された期間を満喫しようと過ごしていた冬のある日、雪が降り積もった。夜が明けから気温が上がるにつれて、路面は車が動かせる状況になった。「もしかしたら行けるかも知れない。行ってみよう！」と湯の鶴に向かった。途中スリップもなく、無事目的地へ到着。そして目指す旅館の露天風呂へ。
期待通り、そこから眺める山はいつもの緑から雪化粧した姿に変化していて、最高の露天風呂となった。♪なごり～雪も～降る時を知り～♪との曲が頭の中を巡ったかどうかは定かではないが、「また水俣に来たい！」と思ったことは間違いない。

それから10年余りの時を経て、第２期とも言える水俣ライフが始まり現在に至っている。第１期の頃と異なり、現在では、福岡・鹿児島間が九州新幹線で結ばれ、水俣も熊本市からの通勤圏内に入った。また、熊本方面に繋がる高速道路も水俣まで開通しより便利になった。現在の私はといえば、新幹線の力も借りて、熊本市内の職場まで通勤している。以前とは異なり、年齢も重ね、定年退職の60歳まであと少しで手が届くとところまできた。そのせいもあってか、温泉を楽しむアプローチが、かつてとは異なり、運動系から労働系と変化してきている。

However, the flow of time could not be stopped, and the time to move back to Kumamoto city came with the completion of my work. I was trying to enjoy the remaining period as much as possible. One snowy winter day, I headed to Yunotsuru hot spring. I arrived there safely, and from the open-air bath I enjoyed the scenery of the mountain that had changed from the usual greenery to a snow-covered whiteness.
I’m not sure if the song went through my head…
♪The snow in early spring knows when it should fall～♪,
I thought that I wanted to come back to Minamata, without a doubt.

It is now about 10 years later. My second life in Minamata has begun. Now, Fukuoka and Kagoshima have been connected by the Kyushu Shinkansen (bullet train), and Minamata is now within commuting range from Kumamoto city. The highway has also opened to Minamata and made everything more convenient. Now I commute to work in Kumamoto City, with the help of the Shinkansen. I have grown older and have only a few years until retirement.

昔、誰かから聞いたことがある。歳を取るにつれて、次第に土いじりをしたくなってゆき、更にその先は、石に興味を持つようになるらしい。その真偽は分からないが、目下のところ週末農業（手伝い）を通じて確かに土いじりを楽しんでいる。そして農作業で汗をかいた後の温泉はまた格別である。
最後に、農作業場の一つから帰宅するルートの上から見える水俣の街の眺めと田植えから収穫まで手掛けた田んぼを含む秋の風景の写真を掲載した。水俣の良さが少しでも伝われば幸いである。

Long ago, I heard from someone that when we get older, we want to cultivate the soil, and further ahead, we become interested in stones. I don’t know the truth. At this moment, I enjoy cultivating a weekend farm. Hot springs are excellent, especially after sweating in farm work. Lastly, I posted a picture of the view of Minamata from top of the farms, and a picture of the autumn landscape, including the rice fields we planted and harvested. I hope the photos show the goodness of Minamata. And please come and stay in Minamata. Like the title of this website, staying in Minamata must have an impact on you as it did on me.
