中尾山

子どもの頃に一番好きな花は、コスモスだった。桃色や白のコスモスの花に囲まれて暮らすことができたら、どんなに夢のようだろう、と子ども心に思った。そんな思いの通りの夢の山が、中尾山だ。中尾山からは水俣が一望できる。水俣が経験した過ちも、悲しみも、ついえた夢も、強さも。コスモスに揺られながら、水俣とは何であったのか、何であるのかを考えてほしい。

When I was a child, my favorite flower was the cosmos. I thought how dreamy it would be if I could live surrounded by these peach-colored and white cosmos flowers. Mt. Nakao is such a mountain of my dreams. From here, you can see Minamata from a distance. The human sin, sorrows, dreams, and strength that Minamata has experienced. As you sway in the cosmos, I hope you will think about what Minamata was and is.

The following is an excerpt from “Minamata Dodo” planned and supervised by Minamata City.

水俣で親しまれている山といえば・・・・・・。
やはりこの山に登らず通り過ぎてしまうわけにはいかない。

頂上へ向かうために乗っていた車がふいに止まった。ドライバーの指し示すほうに目をやって、思わず声をあげる。南東に水墨画のような水俣連峰、北西には海に浮かぶ天草の島々、そして月浦(つきのうら) 台地、袋湾、恋路 (こいじ) 島・・・・・・そうした遠景を背後に従えて、手前には海沿いに広がる水俣の街並みだ。みごとな構成である。緩やかで、なんと温かい絵だろうと見惚れる。

標高333メートルの中尾山だ。この一帯は昭和24 (1949) 年ごろ戦後の農地改革によって開拓団の入植があり、また山頂周辺は地元増反地として近在農家が開墾に従事していて、まさに畑作の山だった。が、食糧事情も深刻でなくなるなど時代は移り、しだいに耕作から離れ、荒地が増えた。

昭和30年代後半から、この地を都市公園に生まれ変わらせる計画が始まった。眺望すぐれた丘を花で埋めよう。まずは、梅。「梅一万本運動」が進められた。次は、桜。市民が集って桜苗を植えた。人びとの思いは叶い、まさに「花の都市公園」に変貌し、絶好のハイキングコースとなった。

The most beloved mountain in Minamata is Mt. Nakao, 333 meters above sea level. This area was turned into farmland around 1949 as part of a program for farmland reform, and the new settlers, as well as the farmers who had already lived in the area, turned this mountain into a farmers’ mountain. However, once the food shortage had become less dire, more and more people began to move away from farming, and what was once farmland became overgrown.

花は春ばかりとはかぎらない。その気持ちがやがて中尾山を秋の名所に仕立てることになる。コスモスだ。昭和36 (1961) 年に建設されたテレビ中継塔が頂上に立っているのだが、その塔に隣接した運動グラウンドの草原にコスモスの畑を作ろうと計画されたのは昭和58 (1983) 年。青年会議所が中心となり、青年団や小学生たちがせっせと植えつけた。そして願いどおり、いまや秋の中尾山の頂上はコスモスの大合唱が繰り広げられている。

平成23 (2011) 年には駐車場と展望台を結ぶ通路「スカイロード」も完成。車椅子でも行けるバリアフリーのスロープだ。空の道という、その名のとおり高みから眺めるコスモスの群れは、華やぎと可憐、そして透明な詩情を見せて謳い、うっとりさせる。

From the late 1960s, however, the city created a hiking path adorned with flowers, planning to turn this area into a park. In the 1980s, citizens began a movement to plant cosmos flowers all over the mountain, and now, every autumn, the entire mountain is covered with cosmos flowers.

Sky Road, the road connecting the parking lot and the observation deck on top of the mountain, was completed in 2011. It is a barrier-free slope, accessible even by wheelchairs. Cosmos flowers, gazing down from high up the mountain, welcome visitors warmly.
