Minamata Disease Patient and Bereaved Family Representative’s “Words of Prayer”

新緑の野山より、静かに春風の香るこの季節、巡る歳月は今年も、水俣病の受難によって亡くなられた方々の慰霊の日を迎え、ここに謹んで哀悼の意を表わすものであります。永き世の、生命の歴史に無き近代文明社会は、無辜なる同胞の民に謂われなき受難を強いて、耐え難い辛酸惨苦を背負わせました。それは、この山河と環不知火海に舫う、魚たちや猫や鳥たちにも及び、次々と病苦にもがき、狂死し逝くその様は、この世の地獄の様相を呈したのでありました。その嘆き悲しみは絶望の淵にあって、苦界の極限から尊厳なる救済を人の世に訴えたのでした。それら無数の生類達にとって、そもそも、ここは「いのちの生国」であり、えにしに結ばれた生命共同体の存在基盤として、生存を約束された生命連環の世界でありました。

A quiet spring breeze is blowing from the fresh green fields and mountains. As the years go by, the Memorial Day for those who died due to the hardship of Minamata disease has come again. I would like to express my deepest condolences.　Throughout the long history of life, our predecessors have built a modern civilized society. However, this society has forced innocent people to suffer unjustified hardships and made them experience unbearable pain and misery.　This pain and suffering were also brought to the fish, cats, and birds that inhabited the mountains, rivers, and Shiranui Sea. One by one, these little lives struggled and died in a frenzy. The way they died at the end of their suffering in hell appealed to humans to redeem the dignity of life.　In the first place, this world is a place blessed with lives as well as the foundation of the life community. And lives were supposed to go in cycles.　

この生命母体を根底から破壊する非情なる愚行は、根元的な「生存の危機」を招来し、大いなる自然界の摂理法則という「御法度を侵した」。そのことに、底知れぬ罪深さがあることを私たち人間は改めて自戒しなければなりません。故に、生命界総体への深い詫入れの祈りを捧げ、その証を表わしてゆかねばならないと思うのです。 しかしいま地上に傲る、病みし近代文明社会は愚かにも「いのちの迷子」となり、ヒトという生命種が「どこから生まれて来て、どこへ還ってゆく身であるのか」。その存在の意味を問われ続けております。

By the ruthless folly of destroying the foundation of life, the lives of Minamata and the natural order of things were endangered. We humans need to realize that it is very sinful. Therefore, we must offer our deepest apologies and prayers to the world of life, and bear witness to it.　However, the sickening modern civilization that covers our society today has become a lost child of life!　Where does the human species come from and where does it go back to? Human beings continue to be questioned about the meaning of existence.

とわ（永久）にして無量なる生国、自然界の一分身の身の程を知り、生かされてこそ生きうる冥加に目覚めることが願われているのは、他ならぬこの世の私たち人間でありましょう。さすれば、苦難の道程を経て半世紀周年の歴史的な岐路を迎えた今こそ、課題としての「いのちの願いに応答する創生紀」と捉え、事件史における社会的立場の違いを一人ひとりが勇気を持って超え、共どもに生命存在としての共通の基盤に立脚しなければなりません。そこから、生命共同体の再構築に向かう主体的な自治を歩むことこそ、水俣の進路であると確信いたします。
実は、御霊記念碑のすぐ近くの林のなかに、五年程前ひっそりと蓮池が生まれました。それ以来毎年夏になると、鮮やかにして見事な桃色の蓮の花を沢山咲かせます。もうしばらくすると、今年の夏もきっと美しい大輪の花を咲かせてくれるでしょう。

We have to be aware that we are only a small part of the natural world, the eternal and infinitely rich home of life, to really appreciate the benefits of being alive and living.　Therefore, now that we have reached a historic crossroads on the half-century anniversary through hardships, we should recognize that we are challenged to answer life’s call. Each individual must return to the foundation of life to courageously transcend the differences in social positions in the Minamata disease case. I believe the self-governance leading to the reconstruction of the community of life be the path that Minamata should take. Five years ago, a pond with lotus blooms was created in the woods near Goryo Monument. The lotus in the pond blooms many bright peach-colored flowers every summer. After a while, it will surely bloom another beautiful big flower this year.

それは、およそ二千年前の古代蓮の原種の「いのちの働き」によるものです。大賀博士という方が種を発見したことから大賀蓮と命名され、不可思議な必然力の計らいでありましょうか。巡り巡ってこの水俣にたどり着き、しっかりと根を下ろしたのです。この蓮の花は、見る人の心に真実への導きを諭すように語りかけ、忘れかけていた命の感動を呼び覚まします。それはまるで、生まれたばかりの初々しい赤ちゃんと対面しているかのような、純粋さに心が洗われ、不可思議な生命力がよみがえるようです。

This lotus flower blooms again this year because the mechanism of life of an ancient species from two thousand years ago still works. The lotus was named “Taiga Lotus” after the doctor who discovered the seed, and through the mysterious guidance of fate, it took root in Minamata. This lotus flower teaches the viewer the path to truth and evokes the emotion of a life that has been nearly forgotten.　When I look at this lotus flower, I feel as if I am face to face with a newborn baby, my heart is revealed in purity, and a mysterious life force is revived.

水俣病半世紀の歴史的体験を経て、濁世における苦海の聖地その埋立地に咲く蓮の花は、まさしく「創生紀を迎えた水俣の応援花」ではないでしょうか。私たちは、これに応答すべく「生命受難とその罪責を共々に深い記憶とし、いのちの願いを遺産として相続し継承すること」をここにお誓い申し上げ、祈りの言葉と致します。

Having experienced the half-century-long history of Minamata disease, the lotus flower blooming on the reclaimed land, a sacred place of suffering sea, is indeed a flower that supports Minamata.　Responding to this support, we swear to you that we inherit the wish for life as our legacy and pass it on to the next generation, deeply remembering the Passion of Life and our responsibility for sin.
